Dubai Travel Guide

Discover Dubai: modern landmarks, culture and desert experiences

Dubai is one of the most dynamic cities in the world, known for its futuristic skyline, luxury experiences and striking contrast between modern architecture and traditional culture. From record-breaking buildings to historic neighbourhoods and vast desert landscapes, Dubai offers a remarkably diverse travel experience.

What makes Dubai distinctive is how quickly the surroundings can change. One moment you are surrounded by glass towers, luxury hotels and enormous shopping centres; the next you are walking through historic districts along Dubai Creek or exploring the open desert.

Iconic landmarks and modern architecture

Dubai is home to some of the world’s most recognisable landmarks. Burj Khalifa dominates the skyline and offers panoramic views across the city. Nearby, Dubai Mall combines shopping, dining, entertainment and major attractions in one extensive complex.

Other architectural highlights include Dubai Frame, which provides views towards both old and modern Dubai, and the Museum of the Future, known for its distinctive design and exhibitions focused on innovation and future technology.

Palm Jumeirah and waterfront areas

Palm Jumeirah is one of Dubai’s best-known engineering projects. The artificial island is home to luxury resorts, beach clubs, restaurants and waterfront promenades.

Dubai Marina and Dubai Harbour are also popular areas to explore, especially during the evening when the towers are illuminated and the waterfront atmosphere becomes more relaxed.

Old Dubai and cultural heritage

To experience Dubai beyond its modern skyline, a visit to Old Dubai is worthwhile. Areas such as the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood feature traditional wind-tower architecture, narrow streets, courtyards and museums connected to the city’s history.

Crossing Dubai Creek on a traditional abra is a simple but memorable experience. The boats connect Deira and Bur Dubai while offering a closer look at everyday activity along the historic waterway.

Desert safaris and outdoor experiences

The Arabian Desert begins just outside the city and provides a completely different setting from central Dubai. Desert safaris are among the most popular excursions and may include dune driving, sandboarding, camel rides, sunset stops and visits to traditional-style desert camps.

Tour programmes differ considerably, so it is useful to check exactly which activities, meals and transport arrangements are included before booking.

Luxury hotels and resort experiences

Dubai is known internationally for its luxury hotels, many of which function as attractions in their own right. Accommodation ranges from beachfront resorts on Palm Jumeirah to city hotels with rooftop pools, skyline views and direct access to shopping and entertainment areas.

Dubai also offers many mid-range and practical accommodation options, particularly around Deira, Bur Dubai, Al Barsha and areas connected to the Dubai Metro.

Beaches and beach clubs

Dubai has several public beaches and private beach clubs. Popular coastal areas include Jumeirah Beach Residence, Kite Beach, La Mer and the beaches around Palm Jumeirah.

Facilities vary by location. Some beaches provide free public access, while resorts and beach clubs may charge an entrance fee or require an advance reservation.

Shopping, dining and evening activities

Shopping is a major part of the Dubai experience. In addition to Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, visitors can explore traditional souks selling gold, spices, perfumes and textiles.

The city also has an extensive dining scene, ranging from affordable restaurants serving food from around the world to premium restaurants in hotels, towers and waterfront locations.

Best time to visit Dubai

The cooler months are generally the most comfortable period for outdoor sightseeing, walking tours, beaches and desert excursions. During the hotter months, most major indoor attractions remain open, but outdoor activities are usually more comfortable during the early morning or evening.

Opening hours, seasonal activities and outdoor event schedules can change throughout the year, so current information should always be checked before travelling.

Getting around Dubai

Dubai has a modern public transport network that includes the metro, trams, buses and marine transport. The metro is especially useful for reaching areas such as Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, Deira and several major shopping centres.

Taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available. A rental car can be useful for travellers planning several locations outside the main metro corridors, although traffic and parking should be considered.

Plan your Dubai experiences

Planning popular attractions and excursions in advance can help you organise your time in Dubai. Options include observation decks, city tours, desert safaris, boat trips, cultural experiences, theme parks and day trips outside the city.
